It's reported from TAIWAN that the Dept of Health "plans to introduce methadone maintenance treatment in prisons ... " One of the directors of the Taiwan CDC explained the rationale: "We believe it is necessary... to help lower recidivism and prevent the spread of AIDS." Initially the program will be offered as a highest priority to those scheduled to be released soon.
Taiwan has shown that it can move quickly from pilot stage to large-scale implementation: methadone maintenance in the community was initiated in 2006 "on an experimental basis" and to date 77 local; hospitals have been designated to cooperate in the program.
